He's determined to uncover the truth behind a decades-old disappearance—even if it kills him
When hotshot reporter Max Malone gets a rare shot of Buckmaster Hamilton with a blonde woman near Beartooth, Montana, he chases down one of the senator's daughters to verify that the woman is his supposedly long-dead first wife. But Kat Hamilton won't give him the time of day, let alone any information about her mother.
With his tousled blond hair, sexy stubble and an old straw cowboy hat topping off his long, lean frame, Kat can just tell Max isn't used to female sources denying him anything. But when her own life is put in jeopardy, it's Max who comes to her rescue. Seems someone is prepared to kill to keep the past in the past. Kat can't deny she needs Max to find out what happened to her mother, but will getting closer and closer to each other lead them to the truth...or to danger?

Daniels improves on her previous outing, Lone Rider, in this solid third Montana Hamiltons contemporary. Journalists camp out at the Hamilton ranch in Beartooth, Mont., day and night in the hopes of catching a glimpse of
presidential candidate and senator Buckmaster Hamilton’s amnesiac ex-
wife, Sarah, who was missing for years
and declared dead. Freelance reporter Max Malone wants the story, and he approaches Kat, Sen. Hamilton’s daughter. She reluctantly agrees to help him investigate her mother’s disappearance when it becomes clear that outside forces are targeting both of them in order to bury the truth. Could Kat’s mom be a member of an antigovernment terrorist group from the late 1970s, or is she an innocent victim who was used by people she thought were friends? Daniels, thankfully and significantly, advances the conspiracy story first introduced in Wild Horses and allows Max and Kat enough time to work together to make their personal connection and romance believable.

Freelance investigative journalist Max Malone knows a good story when he hears one. White House-bound Senator Hamilton's first wife, Sarah, who supposedly drowned herself 22 years earlier, shows up alive and well but with no memory, leaving Max to get to the bottom of things. Not among his plans, though, is falling for Sarah's daughter, Kat, who is the very image of her mother. When it becomes clear that digging into Sarah's past is harrowing indeed, Max must also keep Kat safe while avoiding getting himself killed. A mystery with a radical revolutionary twist, a high body count, and a multithreaded plot that cleverly sows the seeds of doubt result in an intriguing thriller. VERDICT The heartwarming romance gets wrapped up here, but the book ends with a cliff-hanger that is sure to have fans anxious for the next title in the series. Although this romance is complete in itself, it makes sense to begin with the first two books, Wild Horses and Lone Rider. Daniels lives in Montana.
