      Kas, a scholar from Sentinel on a research mission to Earth, encounters Zhi in the Drome of the arena where the warbot combats take place. Zhi tricks Kas into placing a 10,000-sesterce bet on Zhi's hodgepodge warbot in her upcoming match. Zhi loses her match badly and has no money to pay off the house, and so she goes into hiding to elude the house goons. As a result, Kas gets tangled up in this underworld when she is assaulted by the goons. Rescued by Zhi, Kas realizes Zhi is working on trying to reboot another warbot she can pilot. But it is a nearly human warbot from the time of the Third Empire, when Earth was at the height of its technological prowess. Zhi knows new codes, but Kas has studied the old codes. Zhi and Kas join forces to reboot Alpha Zero. Zhi returns to the arena with Alpha Zero where she crushes her nemesis Custis. The house loses big time and Zhi donates Alpha Zero to the Scholarium for research if Kas is the exclusive researcher. An exciting tale where the good guys win. Wexler's many fans will rejoice over this one, and newcomers will look for more of his works. Recommended.
